AUTOCROSS ACTION AT MIDWEST’S SUPREME SUMMER EVENT

This event is always substantial in every category, from the number of cars attending to the area of real estate covered by rolling iron.  One of the biggest shows in the Midwest, it truly keeps growing every year; this year brought a turnout of over 6,200 cars and 75,000 spectators, and entries from 37 states!  This event also featured the Street Machine and Street Rod of the Year competitions, and the level of talent and commitment that went into those builds was really something to see.  Chuck Rowe’s ’37 Chevy by Bobby Alloway was crowned Goodguys 2015 Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year, and Sonny & Debbie Freeman’s ’67 Corvette by Mike Goldman Customs took the Goodguys 2015 Optima Batteries Street Machine of the Year honors.  Over 60 stellar cars competed for those two awards, and the competition was fierce!  For more information on the show and finalists, you can visit the GoodGuys event page by clicking HERE.

The level of competition at this autocross was truly phenomenal, even though the action on Friday and Sunday was impacted by the wet weather.  The PRO-class list was filled with renowned names and unmistakeable cars, and the crowd overflowed the stands and was several people deep around the perimeter fencing.  The 48-Hour Corvette was a strong competitor throughout the weekend, although the number of laps was kept to a minimum due to the extensive number of participants entered and weather delays.  The fastest times were in the 32-35 second range and Chris Smith brought the Corvette through the weekend with a very respectable time of 33.972, putting him in 9th place out of a field of 25.  During the running of the Sponsor Shootout brackets, Chris’s time of 33.716 was knocked out by a 33.351 run by Matt Braun, who went on to finish in 2nd place.  The Sponsor Shootout Autocross was won by Danny Popp with a 31.876; Danny also took home the PRO-class win with a 32.268.

The next outing for the 48-Hour Corvette will be the Motor State Challenge, July 23-25.  The event kicks off on Thursday evening with a 60-mile cruise, followed by track action at Gingerman Raceway on Friday and autocrossing at The Tire Rack in South Bend, IN on Sunday.  More information on the Motor State Challenge can be found HERE; we hope to see you there!
