The 2019 Barrett-Jackson auction is in the books. Results show us that the market for custom cars and trucks is on fire. It’s a great time to be building a pro-touring car, restomod, custom or sport truck. On the flip side, we saw an odd turn in the prices of numbers-matching cars and original classics. According to Hagerty’s Valuation Tool, prime 1969 Boss 429 Mustangs are valued between $317K to $412K, for example. All four BOSS 429’s at Barrett-Jackson sold for less than $290K.
In contrast, the custom car market was flourishing. A custom 1955 Bel Air convertible with a black exterior and a sexy red interior sold for a whopping $363K while a pro-touring 1965 Oldsmobile 442 received a final bid of $187K. It’s a great time to be building a custom car or truck. Enthusiasts are more interested in seat-time than car show trophies. While you might not achieve the same sales results, it’s good to know that your hard-earned asset is as valuable to own as it fun to drive.
