As a suspension company, RideTech strives to continuously improve a critical concept called “Driver Experience” — the connection between the road, your car and your five senses. Though they are not under the car, steering wheel, seats and gauges are among the most important handling upgrades you can make. These parts must provide accurate feedback. The driver must also like they way these parts look and feel. As we put the finishing touches on the 48 Hour Camaro build, one product grabbed the attention of the build crew as well as the tens of thousands of enthusiasts passing through the build tent. For the 48 Hour Camaro, we partnered with Classic Instruments for gauges that match the style and functionality of our project. Our Camaro needs true performance-oriented gauges with modern, sports car styling. Classic Instruments nailed it.
Our Camaro runs the Autocross gauge series. Classic Instruments offers a wide range of customization features including flat or curved lenses, short sweep or full sweep gauge faces, and three types of gauge bezels in black, stainless or even gold. With so many possible combinations of customization options, there is a good chance that your Autocross series gauges will look different those installed in any other car. Pick and choose preferred options from drop-down menus on their website.
On our set, we chose black radial bezels, curved lenses, full sweep dials, white “pool cue” dials and yellow gauge highlights. We are particularly fond of the contrasting yellow tachometer finish. This design element has been featured on exotic Ferraris for more than 10 years. It says… “Hey, I’m driving really fast, so I don’t want to confuse my tach with my speedo…” The tach also has a built in programmable shift light and contrasting red pointer. It’s really cool.
Of course, one feature distinguishes our gauges above all others. Classic Instruments offers a service as part of their Instrument Customization Unit aka “ICU.” The ICU custom printed the RideTech logo onto the dial of our tachometer for a truly unique look. This is the sort of detail that you typically only see on high end, “blank check,” Ridler-type builds. It’s amazing that all of us now have access to truly custom gauges.
Though we are just starting to drive the new 48 Hour Camaro, we already love the driving experience. There is something very special about slipping behind the Momo steering wheel and looking over the custom Hydes Leather-topped dashboard, Kicker KMC20 audio system and unique Autocross Series Classic Instruments gauges. Please be sure to check them out at an upcoming event — starting with Goodguys Texas.
