Let’s compare rod ends to poly bushings. Polyurethane bushings have been around for a long time. The perceived benefit of poly bushings is that they deflect less than rubber. The reality is that polyurethane bushings cause stiction, binding and noise. Compared to rod ends, poly bushings fall short. We built these scale 4-link models to show a direct comparison between poly bushings and RideTech’s new patented R-Joint rod ends. The difference is amazing.
As you can, see poly bushings actually resist motion. Known as “stiction”, the resistance causes less-than-predictable handling response. As a result, your shock absorbers must work harder. Likewise, your overall driving experience is negatively impacted. Furthermore, poly bushings must be greased regularly or the squeaking noise will drive you mad. While it is true that poly deflects less than rubber, the negative effects of binding, stiction and squeaking outweigh the benefit of reduced deflection.
Rod ends have been around for a long time as well. Long favored by the aeronautical industry and racers, rod ends offer exceptional articulation without binding. The functionality does come at a price. Unlike poly bushings, rod ends are not direct replacements for rubber bushings. They cost more than rubber or poly bushings, as well. In high performance cars and trucks, the benefits of articulation without stiction or binding are significant. As is clear in the video, your suspension is free to do its job. Handling response is quick and predictable. The downside to typical rod ends is that they wear out quickly resulting in the need for frequent inspection and replacement. Racers are accustomed to servicing rod ends, despite the high cost. High performance street car enthusiasts, however, demand a more permanent solution. The fix benefits racers, as well.
R-Joint Rod Ends
R-Joints address all of the issues associated with poly bushings and traditional rod ends. You get high articulation, quiet operation and extended service life. There is no stiction, binding or premature wear. The patented R-Joint design combines a self-lubricating RTX10 composite cage with a spring loaded closure system. The RTX10 cage eliminates stiction and premature wear. The spring loaded closure system keeps the bearing in tension which further extends service life. To eliminate corrosion, R-Joints feature stainless steel housings and balls. As the video shows, poly bushings simply cannot compare with R-Joints’ high articulation and free movement.
